The option of slaughter did not prevent this owner from starving and neglecting this horse. This mare was purchased and rehabilitated, but her rescue did not save the horse that the owner purchased the same day from the same fate of neglect and starvation. |

Photographs demonstrate her body condition. Blood work would confirm muscle wasting, and no underlying medical condition as the cause for her emaciation. Business records kept by the auction would prove the owner and the consignment of this mare to the sale. This owner could have been successfully prosecuted on at least 2 counts of cruelty to horses. The minimum fine in PA is $50.00, plus court costs of $75.00. The owner could have also been ordered to pay restitution for the cost of holding the mare as evidence in a criminal investigation. Instead, the owner was PAID $40.00 for the mare! He promptly bought a paint gelding at the sale, which was brought back to the sale months later in an emaciated condition. No surprise! How did the option of slaughter prevent this mare & the paint gelding from being neglected? |
 If the Humane League had chosen to investigate and prosecute this incident, the case would have gone before Judge Carl Good. To the relief of many, Judge Good is no longer on the bench in New Holland court. If this case was properly investigated and the evidence properly collected, maintained and presented the verdict would be guilty. But Judge Good has been known to refuse to accept charges, dismiss cases, and/or found the defendent innocent of all charges. The remedy is not to ignore horse cruelty cases and have private individuals and horse welfare organizations rescue the horses by buying them from the offender. The remedy is to let the voters and the public know how the judicial system is handling horse cruelty cases!

The owner who consigned this horse also purchased another horse, paid for in part by the $40.00 he received from the person rescuing the horse. Complaints to the Humane League of Lancaster County were in vain.
Prosecuting this owner is a no brainer!
